Safety and Service...

The Canadian Ski Patrol's Moto in Action
Since it was formed over 60 years ago, the primary mission of the CSPS has been the prevention of injuries and the provision of first aid in cases of injury or sudden illness. The snow sports industry is turning more and more to the CSPS as the front line of promotion of injury prevention and risk reduction. We are highly visible, present on the majority of slopes & trails and are viewed by skiers & boarders as the "Pro" on the slopes.
CSPS members promote safety in three key ways:
- By setting an example through their own actions
- By educating skiers through talks, presentations and discussions
- By on-snow actions, such as marking hazards, incident site management, and in face to face interactions with the skiing public.
Mission Statement
The National CSPS and Injury Prevention Team will actively promote all aspects of snow skiing/boarding/sliding safety and injury prevention. Through our commitment to education, we will strive to increase the safety awareness of the snow-riding public to make their activities safer and more enjoyable.
“We will be the injury prevention leaders in the skiing industry...We will make a difference!!”

CSPS & Partner Safety Programs
BrainTrust Canada Association is a progressive community agency dedicated to preventing injury and maximizing independence for people living with brain injury. We currently offer services to individuals with brain injury and their families throughout the Interior of BC and our injury prevention efforts have impact across the nation. Brain injury is the greatest cause of death and disability under the age of 45, and the greatest cause of death for children under 20.
This site is dedicated to providing information on helmet safety and answer questions about helmet use. The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) together with the help of many others in the ski industry has developed this site to help educate parents about the benefits and limitations of helmets.
In an effort to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all mountain sports participants in Thunder Bay, the Canadian Ski Patrol and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit encourage skiers and snowboarders to keep their HEADS UP when on the slopes.
Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Observe the Responsibility Code and share with others, the responsibility for a great skiing or snowboarding experience.
“A Little Respect... Think First" teaches you to respect yourself and your abilities by introducing ways to recognize and manage risks on the slopes, including tips from professional skiers. Whether you are a snowboarder or a skier, this program covers what you need to know to prevent serious injuries.
Snow Smart
A joint venture of the CSPS, Canadian Avalanche Association, Parks Canada and the Smartrisk Foundation, the program is aimed at students in Grades 7 and 10. It is an hour in length and addresses risk evaluation and reduction. Unlike Safety Now!, this presentation is given mainly by teachers. It's focus is on increasing awareness that risk is involved in winter sports, supporting learned skills, encouraging students to make smart choices and seek further training at the Smartrisk Foundation web page.
This program has been developed in Ontario Division to communicate a message on ski safety. Its target audience is children between 5and 12 years of age who participate in both Alpine and Nordic Skiing. Our main audience is the "Skiing in Schools" program.
The presentation lasts 45 minutes, is in lecture format using props, with a video called ‘Look Good. Ski Safe’.A short examination is given at the end.
The talk covers conditioning, equipment, clothing, frostbite, nutrition, lifts, hill markings, snow, skier responsibility, buddy system and what to do at an accident scene.
Our Zone Safety Officers arrange and give the course in many schools across Ontario.
